What is a citrus juicer?
An Introduction to Electric Citrus Juicers and Manual Citrus Press Juicers
Citrus juicers such as electric citrus juicers and manual citrus press juicers allow you to get the most out of citrus fruits such as oranges, limes, lemons, grapefruits and tangerines. They are created to handle these specific fruits because some juicers cannot handle the different components such as seeds, segmentation and thick outer skin that characterize citrus fruits. Using a citrus juicer is also convenient because using certain types of citrus juicers allows you to extract the juice from these fruits without removing their skin. As alluded to above, there are two basic types of citrus juicers—electric citrus juicers and manual citrus juicers, or citrus press juicers.
Electric citrus juicers called “electric reamers” are automatic and (obviously) powered by electricity. The Waring Professional Citrus Juicer is an example of an electric reamer citrus juicer. To operate an electric reamer, you press down on the reamer unit, which causes it to spin. The combination of the spinning motion and the pressure from you pushing on the reamer forces the juice to be extracted from the juice. Electric citrus juicers often come with a pulp strainer and container to collect the freshly made juice. Although this is a convenient method of juicing, some feel that it brings out too much bitterness in the fruit because some of the bitter tasting oils get scraped off the inside of the peel and are blended with the juice.
The notable feature of a manual citrus juicer is the fact that it does not require electricity. Instead, manual citrus juicers use leverage to extract juice from the fruit by squeezing it in between two handles of an appropriate size, much like a pressing machine. The advantage of using a manual citrus press juicer is the fact that it is highly effective at squeezing out every single drop of juice without mixing the bitter tasting oils of the peel or injecting a lot of pulp into the juice. In addition, the simplicity of a manual citrus press juicer makes it easy to clean and maintain and these juicers are easily stored because of their small size.
